Monthly Makers Inspiration – Photography

by Jessica

As most of you should know by now, I’m part of the crew behind the creative community/challenge called Monthly Makers. We announce a theme every month for people to be inspired by, and just generally try to inspire people to create more. This month, the theme is PHOTOGRAPHY and Johanna is the host. (Which means she’s responsible for the announcement of the theme and collecting the creations for the month, so head on over to her post to read more about how you can participate. (It’s in Swedish though, sorry to all you non-swedes.))

To help you on your way to create something on the theme Photography I thought I’d compile a inspirational post filled with ideas and creations!

guide: prism photography by Jessica AndersdotterMy best recommendation for anyone who wants to try something new when it comes to photography is to just put a prism in front of the lens! I’ve written a whole post with tips on prism photography for a DSLR, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Before I even got my “real” prism, I used a prism decoration from our Christmas tree and took these selfies just using my phone. The quality isn’t as great, obviously, but I love them so much anyway.

The word “photography” has roots in the greek language, and basically translates to “drawing with light”. In the video above, artist and filmmaker Guy Larsen shows us how he paints with light. Black paint on some kind of see through surface. When he aims a light at it, a wonderful play of light and shadows appears on the wall. It’s such a wonderful idea, and I think something like this would be a brilliant interpretation of the theme. If you want to try something where you don’t really focus on the camera, making collages using photographs totally work as well. Here’s my collage/art journal spread from last month. I’ve been really fascinated by styling photos for a few months now, as it’s something that I haven’t spent much time on despite the fact that photography was my main interest for yeeeeeeears. This theme is an excellent opportunity to focus a little bit more on how you style the picture of something that you’ve created. A great example is this black out poem which isn’t just a beautiful poem but also a wonderful photograph. The poem and photo are both my Johanna, and yes, that is the same Johanna who’s hosting the theme.

Obviously there are like a million more ways to interpret this theme. If you’re struggling with ideas, I’d recommend our Facebook group We are Monthly Makers, where you can ask fellow makers questions and get help with inspiration!
